Nathaniel Gildcrest is the younger of 2 children by Goharg Gildcrest, his human father, and Silinas Mystweaver, his elven mother. Their other son, Flynntash, is older than him by only 16 months. His mother and father were married and lived in Silinas’ home town of Whisperdale, an important trade hub on the border of Human and Elven lands.
The couple mostly kept to themselves, never reaching any notable level of popularity, but they were generally well liked by those who knew them. All was not well for the couple, however. An influential, if somewhat elitist, wizard named Thanassron saw their union as the next level of Human incursion into the Elven city. While Goharg and Silinas were not the first or only mixed species couple in Whisperdale, they drew Thanassron’s attention because he had been Silinas’ superior for decades at the academy of wizardry.
Thanassron intended to use his magic to drive the couple apart, sending the Human away, and win a victory for Elven purity. Unfortunately the spell got out of control and Goharg battered Silinas brutally. Unable to prove his innocence in the face of anti-Human sentiment Goharg and his two boys were exiled when Nathaniel was 7.
Goharg explained to his children the circumstances of their exile, hoping to redeem himself in their eyes. Nathaniel grew up despising Elves for what happened to his parents. His brother, Flynntash, never acquired that flaw. Their father died of a broken heart 3 years after his exile. The brothers were left orphaned in their youth, unsure of what ever became of their mother.
Nathaniel and Flynntash lived as vagrants for a few years. Flynntash took to hard work and honesty, and managed to secure an honest job. The last time he and Nathaniel met, 4 years ago, he was a horse breeder. Unlike his brother, Nathaniel found his niche in conning his way through life. Over the years his ability to get what he wants from others has grown, while his distaste for Elves has faded. Now he sees that just because someone is an Elf doesn’t preclude them from being worthwhile.
Nathaniel adventure to slake his wanderlust and discover new peoples and societies. He also enjoys the test of his abilities as he slides his way into a new city or culture and the challenges that come from using his new acquaintances to get ahead. The wealth and notoriety that comes with adventuring is always nice too.
