Laurana was someone who never liked other elves delving into death and learning magic to rise the dead or magic period. So she decided to learn how to hunt by her friend Gilthanas. She would go out everyday and learn how to lay snares and reset them. When she turned 100 in elven years she decided to do what she said she would never do…magic. So one day when she went out in the woods with gilthanas she told him what she planned to do. “Are you crazy?!” Gilthanas replied.
Laurana really wanted to learn magic and gilthanas saying she was crazy…she wasn’t crazy was she? She thought it over as they both were silent for some time. “You know I really want to do this gilthanas… I promise ill still come out everyday with you into the woods”. Gilthanas agreed and went to see if any animals got caught in the snares, but there was nothing and so they went home. As laurana was laying on her bed she kept thinking who she was going to go to so she can start learning magic and decided she will look for someone in the morning. The next morning she went out in search of her teacher.
As she was walking she bumped into someone. “I am so sorry sir…” she looked up and she never saw anyone as weird as he looks. “Its quite ok child” the stranger told her. She looked at the stranger a little more and noticed she was wearing robes that signify a sorcerer. “Excuse me sir I don’t mean to be rude or anything but could you teach to be a sorceress?” The stranger pondered this over for a moment and replied, “Only if you are willing to do the work.” Laurana nodded and told the stranger her name. “Well my name is Raistlyn miss Laurana, I also have noticed that most of the people in your village don’t do a lot of magic.”
Laurana thought this over and told Raistlyn what has happened these past few months, with elves turning evil when they learn magic. “Well it depends on who the teacher is my dear there are some people out there who look like they are good teachers but they may lead you down the wrong path.” Then after that day they would go everyday to an abandoned warehouse so none would see them and Raistlyn would teach her one spell at a time. He wanted to make sure she knew the spell by heart and mastered it well.
As the days went on with her training with Raistlyn she started to notice something odd about him…like he was hiding something from her. She wanted to ask him what he was hiding but she was too afraid to. Then one day she came a little earlier then usual then she saw it, raistlyn was raising an undead. Laurana felt something weird, like she wanted to learn it but she thought about who she would hurt.
She went home and decided to skip training that day. The next few days she locked herself in her room and never came out, after three days Raistlyn decided to send her a message using a bat. Later that night while laurana was going to bed she heard a tap at the window. She went to go open the door and “Whoosh” the bat flew in and dropped a letter from raistlyn. Laurana was too worried about the bat then seeing the letter fall, she accidentally hit the bat with a spell and the bat fell onto her bed. She went to go see if the bat was ok but the bat’s wing was injured and so she decided to help the bat out, because she felt bad for hurting it.
After a few weeks of taking care of the bat she noticed it was getting its mobility in its wing back, at night the bat would fly around the room for a few minutes then landing because the wing wasn’t fully healed. After about a month the bat’s wing was fully healed and later that night decided to let it free. She then went on with her life doing training with Raistlyn and then eventually forgetting about poor Gilthanas.
The next night she was going to bed when she saw the bat in her room, she was going to scream but decided right then and there to keep the bat. She felt like she would be a good sorceress with a bat and decided to name it silvara. When all that was going on laurana decided to delve into the mysteries of death and how to control undead.
Laurana decided to go see Gilthanas in the woods early that morning. When she got there she saw Gilthanas and ran to him saying, ”Gilthanas!” Gilthanas was very angry with her for ignoring them going into the woods together even though she promised and also for learning magic. “Gilthanas?” laurana replied. “I think it’s better off if we weren’t friends anymore…
